The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) aims to continue the Providers' Clinical Support System - Medication Assisted Treatment (PCSS-MAT) program developed during the first funding period, as well as expand in response to lessons learned and the changing landscape of the opioid epidemic and treatment system. PCSS-MAT is carried out by an AAAP led consortium with four of the five organizations authorized by the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000. Current partner organizations include American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine, American Psychiatric Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse. Partnerships have been expanded to include the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, the American Academy of Emergency Physicians, and the American College of Physicians to increase involvement of primary care physicians and the justice system. PCSS-MAT will expand the current program by providing comprehensive training to support MAT delivery, including a focus on: a) integrating patient selection and matching with treatment setting; b) expanding treatment using each of the FDA approved medications (methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone); c) managing co-occurring substance, psychiatric and medical disorders and chronic pain; and d) addressing specialized populations such as adolescents, the elderly, pregnant women, veterans and individuals in the justice system. Improvements will be made to the didactic and mentoring programs to increase the proportion of trainees who adopt MAT. Greater focus will fall on training primary care clinicians who are at the front lines of the opioid epidemic. An implementation program will be developed to leverage PCSS-MAT toward helping the individual prescriber as well as multidisciplinary teams and health care systems needed to more effectively implement MAT for OUDs.
