The aim of the Interdisciplinary Minority Fellowship Program (IMFP) will be to identify, select, and support the training of ethnic and racial minority graduate students across the disciplines of psychology, social work, nursing, substance use and addictions counseling, mental health counseling, and marriage and family therapy, who will significantly contribute to the behavioral health services needs of ethnic and racial minorities with mental or substance use disorders. This aim will address the need to reduce behavioral health disparities among ethnic minorities in the U.S. specifically related to culturally competent and evidence-based treatment for mental and substance use conditions. IMFP’s target populations will include ethnic and racial minorities in need of mental health or substance use treatment and ethnic/racial minority graduate students across these disciplines. To fulfill our aim, each year of the project, the IMFP will: (a) Increase the number of master’s and doctorally trained professionals providing behavioral health services to underserved populations by supporting 55 master’s and doctoral Fellows; (b) Provide quality training and support to increase Fellows’ knowledge, skills and abilities by providing stipends to students, hosting an orientation workshop that will include an introduction to MFP and SAMHSA, providing at least 10 training webinars focused on practitioner skill-based content and interdisciplinary project discussions, providing at least three mentoring opportunities through the Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee, and hosting a professional development conference to provide didactic training and mentoring experiences on transitioning into careers specific to providing behavioral health services for ethnic and racial minorities as well as a presentation of the community project; (c) Engage with communities of underserved racial and ethnic minority populations using behavioral health services-based interdisciplinary collaboration by facilitating collaborations between Fellows on an interdisciplinary community project; and (d) Expand and maintain the infrastructure necessary to implement, sustain, and improve effective behavioral health services for underserved populations by implementing an annual social media campaign/strategy for program visibility and Fellow engagement and conducting at least two recruiting presentations in various regions. By year two of the project, MFP will implement an upgraded online database to be used for efficient tracking of Fellows.
