Project Description Wayside Youth & Family Support Network (Wayside) will expand upon a strong network of stakeholders in Watertown, Waltham, Belmont and Brookline, MA, to provide Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings (YMHFA) across the catchment area. The Project Aware grant will train a minimum of 1000 adults in the catchment area who interface with youth in a variety of settings including parents, law enforcement, school personnel, librarians, clergy, recreation and athletics staff. The region is rich in ethnic diversity and culture and for example, Watertown has a racial/ethnic mix as follows: 85% White, non-Hispanic; 7 % Asian; 5% Hispanic; 3% black, non-Hispanic. The white population includes a significant minority of Armenian descent (33%). Of particular note is that 31% of residents speak a language other than English at home and there are an astounding 36 languages spoken in the elementary schools. At least 25% of the population is not born in the US. Behavioral health issues are worsening in some realms, especially in the aftermath of the Marathon bombing and subsequent shootout and lockdown in Watertown, which was witnessed by many youth and adults in the community who continue to show signs of trauma from this experience. In the region, the mental illness rate of 19.8% is higher than the state at 19.4% and the US rate of 18.75%. Dependence or abuse of illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year is 9.07%, higher than the State rate of 7.94% and US rate of 6.77%. Alcohol dependence or abuse in the past year is 5.26% vs. 4.63% state wide. And alcohol use in the past month at 18.32% is concerning vs. 15.94% statewide. As first generation Americans, the children in these families often struggle between two cultures of their home and family and the American teenage culture which they are attempting to join.... Project Description Mountain Comprehensive Care Center will implement the Big Sandy Region Youth Mental Health Literacy Project in Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike Counties in eastern Kentucky. With high rates of poverty, high numbers of adverse childhood experiences (exceeding national rates), suicide as the leading cause of death for adolescents, high rates of mental illness across the region, and continuing trauma from devastating weather-related events, MCCC has identified the greatest need for intervention is for adolescents ages 12-18. Coupled with this is the need to train parents and other adults throughout the community to break cultural bias and stereotypes regarding behavioral health issues, so they can be critical First Aiders for their children and other youth. The project will certify the Project Coordinator and 29 School-based Therapists to receive and conduct YMHFA training. The project will target a diverse group of persons to be trained as First Aiders to ensure broad community representation. Based on the current adolescent population, the project will train 30 YMHFA Instructors who in turn will train 1,125 First Aiders annually and 3,375 over the three-year project period. The primary outcomes for clients are decreased rates of depression and other mental health issues. For the community/population, outcome measures will focus on training and maintaining 30 YMHFA Instructors; providing a minimum of 45 workshops annually; developing collaborative community partnerships; and providing YMHFA training to a minimum of 1,125 First Aiders. For the provision of behavioral health services, the project will increase the number of youth ages 12-18 referred to behavioral health service screening, assessment, or treatment. Morehead State University will conduct an independent evaluation which will track required performance measures, outcomes, fidelity, cultural competence, and quality improvement.... View More

Project Description Access Health will support the training of 1,000 teachers and other youth-serving adults in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) throughout Sagadahoc County and the communities of Brunswick and Harpswell in midcoast Maine. According to the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (2013), the percentage of high school youth in the catchment area who reported that they felt sad or hopeless every day for two weeks or more is higher than the percentage for the state of Maine as a whole. Also higher than the state average is the percentage of youth in the catchment area who had seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months. These adolescents in crisis are not getting the help they need - of the 29.6% of youth who reported feeling sad and hopeless, only 22.5% report getting help from an adult. To help ensure that adolescent youth in the catchment area are ready to learn and able to transition successful from high school to the next stage of their lives, Project Aware will: increase the mental health literacy of adults who interact with adolescents in Brunswick, Harpswell and Sagadahoc County as measured by a ten percentage point increase in the number of youth who report receiving help from an adult when feeling sad or hopeless; increase the capacity of 1,000 adults - particularly teachers and middle and high school; increase awareness of and promote positive behavioral health; link adolescents with behavioral health issues to mental, emotional and behavioral health assistance and services as measured by an increase in the number of youth ages 12 - 18 from the catchment area assessed by our behavioral health partners from 250 to 400 and the number who received a psychiatric diagnostic interview from 190 to 300; and increase the number of relevant youth serving community agencies and programs with trained first aiders from 0 to 50.... Project Description This proposal is to implement Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) in two South Carolina Counties (Newberry County: population 37,500 and Saluda County: population 20,000). To improve the counties' ability to identify youth in need of behavioral health services, we have identified adolescents aged 12 to 18 who are universally at risk for behavioral health disorders. Over the course of the three years, 310 First Aiders will be trained in each county by 1 of 6 Instructors. There is a significant need to link this population to services as demonstrated in data showing early alcohol and drug use, mental health issues (e.g., including externalizing behaviors, suicidality, etc.), and minimal access to the accessibility and availability of services. The closure of the mental health center in Saluda County in August 2011 has been a significant challenge for the population who now has to drive at least 30 minutes to receive services in a neighboring county. The existing referral resources within both counties will primarily include the behavioral health agencies (e.g., Westview Behavioral Health and Saluda Behavioral Health), Beckman Mental Health Center, and the schools. This is in addition to the existing health resources such as 911, Newberry Hospital, Poison Control, Crises Lines, and Emergency Rooms. There are no psychiatrists that serve adolescents in Saluda or Newberry County. Medical staff, such as psychiatrists and other physicians, will be accessed through the South Carolina Department of Mental Health or the Child Psychiatric Units as part of the hospitals in Columbia, SC.... Project Description Mental Health America of Northern Kentucky and Southwest Ohio will launch PROJECT ACE: AWARE-CONNECTED-ENGAGED, to accelerate the reach of Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) in Ohio. The project will focus on youth ages 12-18 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Hamilton County is the third most populous county in Ohio, and home to approximately 185,525 youth. Youth in Hamilton County have some of the highest rates of suicide and homicide in the State of Ohio. High rates of childhood poverty, substance abuse, and mental health issues are among other reasons to target this population. Because Hamilton County is home to many behavioral health agencies in addition to world-class business, education, healthcare, performing arts and faith based organizations, the likelihood of success is high. Building the connection between youth and services is essential to influence current social norms referenced above. YMHFA will be marketed to adults with the most contact with youth in the catchment area. "ACE" adults will begin to build the bridge to available resources and services. Project goals include an increase in help seeking behaviors of the youth throughout the catchment area, an increase in adults' mental health literacy and confidence to help youth in need, and an increase in the number of referrals to services made by certified First Aiders. Planned measures include utilization of mental health services as reported by partnering agencies, an increase in the number of individuals certified in YMHFA, and self-report of referrals made by First Aiders. This project will train 1,000 adults who serve Hamilton County youth in YMHFA the first year, 1,050 in the second year, and 1,100 in the third year, for a total of 3,150 certified First Aiders by the end of the funded project period.... Project Description The Ferguson Area Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) project will train 2,025 adults to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health conditions and connect youth in need to treatment and resources. Teachers, parents, law enforcement personnel, mentors, individuals from faith communities, and agency providers in Ferguson, Missouri and surrounding communities in North St. Louis County will receive YMHFA training. The project team will leverage Missouri's substantial YMHFA expertise and build a network of First Aiders to serve and support primarily African American adolescents ages 12-18 in and around Ferguson. Youth in the area are extremely vulnerable to serious mental health challenges because of poverty and racial and ethnic disparities, compounded by community violence and protests. The project's goal will be achieved through the following objectives: train 12 new YMHFA instructors from youth-serving partner organizations in the Ferguson community and surrounding areas; train 2,025 First Aiders (600 in year 1, 675 in year 2, and 750 in year 3 by conducting 81 high quality YMHFA courses in the greater-Ferguson community; and strengthen relationships with mental health service providers in the Ferguson area to facilitate youth mental health referrals. The Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis will serve as the lead agency in partnership with community members and three well-respected organizations including Behavioral Health Response, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, and Great Circle.... Project Description Project AWARE Community Grant allows Janesville Mobilizing 4 Change (JM4C) to provide Youth Mental Health First Aid training to equip adults with the skills to help an adolescent developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. JM4C's goal is to reduce the number of youth reporting depressive symptoms and attempting suicide. They will reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and increase youth access to care. Based on adolescent reports of high rates of depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts from the 2014 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, JM4C expanded their focus from substance abuse prevention to include improving the mental health environment for youth. Youth in Janesville are surrounded by risk factors for mental health: poverty, juvenile arrest rates, homelessness, youth and adult substance abuse, unemployment, child maltreatment, bullying, low school connectedness, and poor academic achievement. JM4C Project AWARE will reach its goals through the following objectives: train 1.6% of the adult population, youth will be surrounded by trained adults who are capable of recognizing and responding to any mental health issues that arise; and to decrease the number of attempted suicides by 5%, as measured through the Youth Risk Behavior Survey....
