Project Description The Chadwick Center for Children and Families and the Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego, propose to create the Chadwick Trauma-Informed Systems Dissemination and Implementation Project (CTISPDI) to meet the needs of child abuse victims served by Child Protective Services and Child Welfare. This Center, in cooperation with the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, other select TSA and Community Treatment and Services Centers across the country, NCTSN committees, and child welfare and mental health organizations providing trauma treatment nationwide, will lead the transformation of public child welfare (CW) agencies into trauma-informed systems. CTISP-DI will translate the Trauma-Informed Child Welfare Conceptual Framework developed by CTISP into a systems-level intervention that includes multiple components including training, consultation, and ongoing support using the Trauma-Informed Child Welfare Practice Toolkit and the revised version of the Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit also developed as part of CTISP, among other tools. The CTISP-DI Trauma-Informed Child Welfare System Intervention will be disseminated to at least six CW systems across the country to help them become supercommunities that fully implement the intervention at a true performance level. These evolved, trauma-informed systems will reach thousands of children and families and serve as exemplars for their states and the nation while helping lead the movement to true trauma informed practice. The CTISP-DI will help change the wider community CW system into a multi-dimensional, evidence-based, trauma-informed system that is better able to meet the unique needs of children and families involved in the CW system.... Project Description The primary objective of this project is to establish the Program on Adolescent Traumatic Stress (PATS), with the following specific goals: (1) to further adapt, develop, evaluate and disseminate evidence-based, culturally relevant, trauma-informed interventions and resources for traumatized adolescents and (2) to increase access and build capacity nationally for the delivery of these interventions and services for this population. To achieve these goals three specific project are proposed: (1) development of Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for adolescents (TF-CBTa); (2) adaptations and development of NCTSN products supporting delivery of effective, trauma-informed services for adolescents involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare service systems (CW-JJ Products); and (3) evaluation, dissemination and implementation of Risk Reduction through Family Therapy (RRFT; an intervention designed to reduce substance use risk and trauma-related mental health problems among abused adolescents. With Supplemental funding the project will target the southeastern region of the US to increase the capacity and access to evidence-based, trauma-focused interventions given these high rates of youth victimization and the disproportionate number of youth involved in the child welfare system. A total of an additional 960 practitioners will be trained across 6 states through 12 additional learning collaboratives.... View More

Project Description The Treatment and Services Adaptation (TSA) Center for Resiliency, Hope, and Wellness in Schools proposes to 1) serve as the primary trauma resource site for schools between the NCTSN and our nation's schools; 2) develop and disseminate school-based trauma informed prevention interventions, and to create trauma-informed schools; and 3) create technology-enhanced tools and materials for broader dissemination in schools. We propose to address all types of trauma, in recognition of the broad array of traumas experienced by students in schools and the desire to meet the needs of the entire school. The TSA Center for Schools will partner with the National Center and its member and alumni sites to build resilience by preparing and educating schools to be responsive to the needs of their constituents with seamless, accessible and effective child and family services, involving all members of the school community. The Center proposes to fill critical gaps for this child-serving system by enhancing widespread access to, training in, and implementation support for materials and resources to 1) enhance the expertise of school-based personnel along the prevention-recovery continuum, including violence and bullying prevention and Dept of Ed endorsed PFA: Listen Protect Connect for school crisis intervention; 2) address the lack of evidence-based programs delivered in schools with scarce mental health resources, by disseminating the teacher led Support for Students Exposed to Trauma (SSET) program and developing a self-guided web-based Student Trauma Resiliency Curriculum (STRC) program for older middle and high school students; 3) extend the reach of school-based trauma interventions to address the needs of elementary age students with the Bounce Back program; and 4) identify and address the needs of particularly vulnerable students, such as LGBT youth.... Project Description The Fordham University, Creating and Sustaining the Next Generation of Trauma-Informed Practitioners project proposes to implement "Core Concepts First" a model that combines foundational developmentally informed trauma knowledge with five treatments designed to treat trauma's pervasive developmental effects. The Center's model will transform NCTSN trauma training and increase the capacity of practitioners, schools of social work (SSW), and community agencies to provide children, adolescents and their families the most effective trauma-informed treatment. The Center will work with practitioners, community based agencies, NCSTN Category II sites and schools of social work to implement its "Core Concept First" model, which combines NCTSN Core Curriculum on Child Trauma (CCCT) with trauma treatment trainings. Project Goals: The combined package is designed to strengthen trauma training by (1) increasing practitioner's knowledge of developmental trauma, (2) transforming the ways in which NCTSN offers trauma treatment training, (3) creating the infrastructure to assist community agencies to become organizationally ready to introduce and sustain trauma treatment; 4) developing the capacity of practitioners and community agencies to provide developmentally informed trauma care, including military families and children and Native American children, and 5) extending the Center's local, regional and national reach. Population to be served: Community agencies, schools of social work, current and future (students) practitioners who serve children and youth whose early exposure to multiple episodes of interpersonal violence in the context of deprivation and neglect puts them at increased risk for negative developmental consequences across the lifespan. The project will reach over 1500 agency practitioners, 30-40 new SSW and over 2000 students over the four years of the grant.... View More

Project Description The FIRST Program (Families Increasing Resilience, Strength and Trust through positive relationships) will leverage training expertise, program evaluation, and product development to further the NCTSN's mission to positively impact the lives of families impacted by trauma. The FIRST Program will increase availability of two evidence-based interventions delivered with high fidelity to families impacted by trauma--Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Sexual Behavior Problems: Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (SBP-CBT). The selected models address childhood behavioral problems common among children affected by sexual and non-sexual trauma, as well as child behavior problems common among families adjusting to military deployment related trauma. Both PCIT (a SAMHSA recognized intervention) and SBP-CBT (a comprehensive family-based intervention for children with inappropriate sexual behaviors apply treatment in a family context. Implementation methods include innovative telehealth applications and Learning Collaborative (LC) strategies. This project will expand treatments to military families experiencing deployment stressors and will enhance family resilience. This collaboration will contribute to the Network's understanding of the implementation process for family-based interventions, including integrating new research findings from our studies of telehealth based implementation. The FIRST Program will provide support and leadership to Category III sites and other agencies seeking to expand their portfolio of trauma informed services. Project deliverables will include: 1) PCIT and SBPCBT LC models; 2) uniform training methods and materials; 3) Telehealth protocols; and 4) development of a model of care for families of children with trauma exposure and secondary behavior management problems.... Project Description Early Trauma Treatment Network: Raising the Standard of Care for Young Children 0-5 The Early Trauma Treatment Network (ETTN) will address the needs of traumatized young children/preschoolers by raising their standard of care and increasing their access to evidence based trauma treatment. ETTN will work to build early trauma competence in the systems serving these children, who are most vulnerable to trauma due to statistically higher exposure, developmental vulnerability, and dependency on parents or caregivers. ETTN will address training and service gaps by activities that promote workforce development; create culturally competent products, resources and training protocols; and build mechanisms for collaboration across the mental health, pediatric care, early childhood education, early intervention, child welfare, judicial, and military systems. ETTN is a collaborative of four national programs. All ETTN sites provide training in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), a manualized, evidence-based, intervention for young children. To improve access to services and raise the standard of care for traumatized young children/preschoolers, ETTN will build training infrastructure and conduct 5 Learning (LC) through the core grant with NCTSN centers and community-based programs, focusing on American Indian providers, providers of military families, distance learning technologies, "train the trainer" LCs to increase CPP capacity in training and supervision, and national LCs with tracks for Spanish speaking providers; create educational and training materials for parents, childcare providers, and service providers for families in the military; and collaborate with the National Center and NCTSN centers in cross-site evaluation, training, and dissemination. Each grant year ETTN members will provide trainings on early childhood trauma to over 10,000 providers in different systems and service sectors; and train a minimum of 60 mental health practitioners annually to implement CPP... Project Description The Childhood Violent Trauma Center (CVTC) of the Child Study Center at the Yale School of Medicine proposes to serve as the lead Treatment and Service Adaption (TSA) Center in the area of acute/early/brief intervention. Efforts will focus on the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI), for children 7-18 who have experienced potentially traumatic events (PTE) including sexual and physical abuse; domestic violence (DV); community violence (CV), and injuries and accidents, and have endorsed symptoms of acute stress. The proposed project will broaden the application, adoption and dissemination of CFTSI with a variety of populations and service systems through: 1) continued adaptation and implementation of CFTSI in Child Advocacy Centers (CACs); 2) continued adaption of CFTSI for children in foster care; and 3) development of adaptations for implementing CFTSI in Domestic Violence (DV) shelters, emergency departments (ED) and with Military Families. CFTSI dissemination will be broadened by conducting a national Learning Collaborative (LC); and by building training capacity via a Train-the-Trainer (TTT) Program. Additionally, the web-based CFTSI Site Sustainability System (CS3) will be developed to collect, analyze and report clinical outcomes and implementation process data, supporting continuous quality improvement and sustainability.... Project Description Project LAUNCH Indiana will be implemented by the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Maternal and Child Health Division (MCH) in partnership with the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) of the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA). The implementing partner is Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana. The Indiana School of Medicine (IOM), Department of Pediatrics will also participate by providing medical guidance, education, and evaluation services. The proposed service area is the Marion County-Indianapolis Metropolitan area that is served by Goodwill Industries in central Indiana. Within the service area, the pilot project targets Goodwill of Central Indiana's employees, students, and Goodwill's Nurse Family Partnership clients. The goal of Project LAUNCH Indiana is to create a model and shared vision for the promotion of healthy physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development for children from birth to 8 years of age. This model will be studied to see if it can be implemented with other organizations (businesses, faith based organizations, and others). Specifically, Project LAUNCH Indiana is proposing to develop a business tool kit that not only addresses a shared vision for promoting the wellness of young children but also provides a model and pathway for employers and other organizations to develop a comprehensive early childhood infrastructure for its employees....
