Project Description The goals of the Coalition are: (1) establish and strengthen collaboration among the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition's partner organizations in support of the community's effort to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth; and (2) reduce substance abuse among youth in the cities of Roanoke and Salem and the counties of Botetourt and Craig, VA, and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the issues in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. The Coalition will achieve its goals by implementing these strategies: (1) Increase the capacity of the Coalition to mobilize resources through community support. (2) Assess current trends and identify ongoing problems to be addressed including emergence of trends based on race, age, gender, and socio-economic status. (3) Decrease youth access to alcohol and prescription and over-the-counter medicines with education campaigns to strengthen community norms against the use of these medicines. (4) Change the physical design of the environment to increase zero tolerance signage, change product placement, and provide easy access to medicine disposal. (5) Modify and change policies to increase retailers requiring server training, increase business policies that promote appropriate disposal of prescription medicines and policies of charities to reduce alcohol consumption to raise funds. (6) Change consequences by providing public recognition of adults and youth that promote and support reduced youth alcohol and prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.
