Title: Campus Suicide Prevention Grants
Project Period: 2012/08/01 - 2015/07/31
Wartburg College seeks to educate campus communities at small, rural colleges and universities about the risk factors and warning signs of suicide ideation among college students in an effort to fill gaps in service inherent to the limited campus and community resources these schools have and to create a mindset that suicide prevention is everyone's responsibility. Through the proposed program-Suicide Prevention at Small, Rural Colleges and Universities-Wartburg College seeks to take a three-fold approach to reducing suicide attempts and completions among college students: 1)Identification and acquisition or development of culturally-relevant and culturally-sensitive educational materials for dissemination to the campus community 2)Planning and implementation of a series of educational seminars for the campus community 3)Hosting a one-day seminar for representatives of peer institutions identified as small, rural college and universities in Iowa and surrounding states.

Title: Campus Suicide Prevention Grants
Project Period: 2012/08/01 - 2015/07/31
The Oakland University Campus Suicide Prevention Program (GRASP Grizzlies Response: Awareness and Suicide Prevention) is a comprehensive multi-dimensional program encompassing both the University and the Southeast Michigan community. Oakland University is a growing University serving a student population of over 19,000 students. The majority of our student population is commuter students balancing multiple tasks such as work, family, and classes. GRASP coordinates the activities of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Department of Counseling, School of Health Sciences, Social Work program and the Department of Teacher Development and Educational Studies. The program approaches suicide prevention using knowledge, awareness, and skill development with three levels of training and education. At Level 1, educational workshops modeled on Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR): Core Competencies for Mental Health Professionals will be offered to key gatekeepers in the OU community to develop a critical mass of advocates for suicide prevention and mental health promotion. At level 2, tailored and modifiable training workshops will be developed to meet a diverse range of suicide prevention needs across the OU community, including residents, commuters, undergraduate students, graduate students, GLBT community, military families, veterans, American Indians/Alaska Natives. Level 3 activities will include the development and adaptation of informational materials and suicide awareness presentations that connect to the virtual learning center with further opportunities to participate in gatekeeper training (level 2 learning activities). The goal of the grant is to train over 20% of the campus community as well as key stakeholders. In addition, this proposal aims to increase awareness of suicide prevention campus wide. GRASP includes regular needs assessments to develop targeted educational training, print and social media.

Title: Statewide Consumer Network Grant
Project Period: 2012/09/30 - 2015/09/29
The Mental Health Empowerment Project's (MHEP's) proposal "Creating a Trauma-Informed Community" is a project to support the implementation of trauma-informed peer support in existing peer-run programs and to expand the adoption of trauma-informed principles among mental health programs in New York State. A thorough understanding of trauma and its impact, along with the implementation of trauma-informed practices throughout the public mental health system, would offer a unique opportunity to transform mental health services and systems to make them less coercive, more empowering and recovery-oriented, and more responsive to the self-identified needs of people who use services. Goals and objectives for the project are to: Goal 1. Share information about trauma and its impact; trauma-informed practices; and trauma-informed peer support among peer-run programs and the broader peer community in New York State. Goal 2. Support the implementation of trauma-informed peer support in five existing peer-run programs in New York State. Goal 3. Promote the adoption of trauma-informed values and practices in State and local mental health systems and services by promoting peer leadership in the development of local coalitions advocating for trauma-informed systems change. These goals will be addressed through a number of objectives including: A series of regional symposiums that will provide basic information on trauma informed peer support and trauma informed practice; a virtual electronic learning community that will allow the sharing of educational resources; the provision of training and on-going mentoring; and, the development and dissemination an advocacy toolkit to support coalition-building to promote trauma-informed systems change at the local and State level.
