Tropospheric darkness aka this will be the last time

Often in addiction we cope by creating a facade. When recovery is working, we begin to remove the facade and become our true self's once again

Magazine Collage Puzzle

In nature, we see an ongoing series of endings and new beginnings. Nature has the ability to regenerate itself, which can inspire those struggling with addiction to persevere and redefine themselves in spite of challenges. By using nature as a vehicle to help us stay connected to the world, it provides us with a sense of meaning and purpose. To achieve the calming effects that nature has to offer, we engage our senses by spending time outdoors. There are feelings of natural light on your face, gentle breezes, beauty of trees and wildlife, and earthy smells.

I hand fabricated this little 14k gold jewelry using an old ring from my grandma. My mom has been such an amazing support throughout my addiction, and later in my career path as a CADC II supervising a street outreach team in Portland OR. I was honored to gift this to her on Mother's Day 2024

Not too long ago I realized if I didn't start letting people in - to my head - my brain would explode into messy fragments and ooze out of me, like the images attached. These images exemplify what was already going on inside my head, and because I was ashamed of myself and my mind, I didn't share myself with anyone. This one simple collage attached my first - opened the world to me. It provided such a feeling of contentment and I realized with art I wouldn't have to explain or describe my feelings and fears with words, and that my art could speak for me.

My inspiration was my journey in my own mental health recovery. I had to climb over mountains to heal. The Band-Aids on the brain symbolize wanting to heal and the flowers symbolize the beauty of healing.

With art I can go anywhere in my imagination, where there are no boundaries or rules. With a diagnosis of Bipolar 1 disorder, professional mental health care, coupled with my artistic endeavors, help me transcend my angst. Creating dolls allows me the ability to express those which nurtures and comforts me, and that which sometimes allows me to express the unspeakable. This doll, entitled ‘Fight or Flight’, is a metaphorical depiction of the fight or flight emotion arising from my disorder. The warrior theme is common with my dollmaking as I have become one. The angel theme is common due to my passion for winged creatures.

When I’m stressed, I want to create something. Focusing my energy helps to manage my emotions. I am a visionary; I see it and I want to complete my vision. When I complete my creation, I feel accomplished, I feel hopeful, and I feel I’m doing something positive. My sculpture is called Everyone Happy. It’s about creating an inclusive space for everyone to recover in a safe environment. We all have different needs, for me it’s about staying creative and productive.

Precious B Making art makes me feel like I can achieve anything I put my mind to. Art brings down my anxiety and gives me something I enjoy doing without the use of drugs. My art depicts a miniature world filled with possibilities of a peaceful drug free environment.

I find a lot of healing through my artwork. I work with skulls, but I am only submitting my photos of them. I struggle with a brain injury, and PTSD. Through my art I find calm. this one I was painting about myself. I hide in my turtle shell when the world becomes too much. The pick is for healing of the heart.

I spend my time creating Bird Baths out of broken glass & pottery pieces that have been discarded. Completed pieces demonstrates how beauty can often be created by manipulating and working on the many broken parts of those suffering with mental illness. Additionally, the selection of colors, patterns, and/or mixed media used in creating these Bird Baths mirror the journey of symptoms experienced, with times of clarity and calm and other times of opaqueness and confusion. Through the process - clarity & calmness eventually can be achieved.

This was a collaborative piece done by myself and my daughter Allison Lynch. We incorporated several relevant and corresponding components to this piece. The positive affirmations you see on the leaves cover negative self-comments on leaves underneath. We enjoyed adding a genuine bird's nest and real bird eggs, some cracked and one whole. The eggs are meant to represent how through addiction you can be broken and how through recovery you can be made whole. We also enjoyed being able to put a reflective surface as our background, which can either reflect the sunlight or rain clouds.
