This guide provides an overview of acute stress disorder in children, a less severe and briefer condition than posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Like PTSD, acute stress disorder may be triggered by a natural or human-caused disaster.

Information in the guide includes signs of acute stress disorder in children; risk factors, including a mental disorder that the child was experiencing before the more recent stressor leading to acute stress disorder; diagnosis; treatment; and risk for developing other disorders.
