SAMHSA’s outreach activities in communities across the United States help to encourage public involvement and communicate issues related to behavioral health.
Community Conversations About Mental Health
Community Conversations About Mental Health provides information on how to hold a community dialogue that breaks down misconceptions and builds awareness and support around mental health issues. The toolkit contains briefs, guides, and other resources designed to help people promote mental health and access to treatment and recovery services within communities.
National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day has grown in scope, visibility, and support since its beginning in 2005. This initiative now connects many different organizations in their efforts to promote awareness of children’s mental health issues not just on a single day, but year-round. In 2014, 1,100 communities and 136 national collaborating organizations joined SAMHSA in celebrating the 2014 National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day: Inspiring Resilience, Creating Hope. Learn about The Excellence in Community Communications and Outreach Recognition Program, which showcases and celebrates the outstanding achievements of grantees.
National Prevention Week
National Prevention Week is a SAMHSA-supported annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. Learn from other organizations and communities how to create successful prevention events. To help with planning, SAMHSA provides state-specific reports, state barometers, and metro reports that provide information on the scope of behavioral health issues from a local level.
National Recovery Month
National Recovery Month is a national observance that educates Americans on the fact that addiction treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. Visit the National Recovery Month website for resources and community event information.
Underage Drinking Town Halls
SAMHSA presents outcomes from a series of town hall meetings done in 2012 to educate communities about underage drinking and engage them in prevention efforts. Included are brief case studies to illustrate different approaches and lessons learned in hosting successful events.
