Providers Clinical Support System–Universities (PCSS-Universities)

The Providers Clinical Support System – Universities (PCSS-Universities) aims to expand/enhance access to medications for substance use disorder (MOUD) services for persons with a substance use disorder (SUD) seeking or receiving treatment through ensuring the education and training of students in the medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner fields.

The education and training programs developed by the PCSS-Universities provide insight and best-practices for other colleges and universities interested in integrating SUD education and training into their core curriculum. Trainings provide practitioner training in the evidence-based prevention and treatment of SUD and the trainings needed to apply for DEA registrations to prescribe Schedule II-V medications as directed in Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (PDF | 3.7 MB), known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act.

Core Curriculum

PCSS-Universities are at the forefront of the national effort outlined in the 2022 National Drug Control Strategy (PDF | 2.6 MB) to develop core curriculum on SUD for all medical and health professions educational programs. The effort aims to ensure that every student is educated early in their academic careers on SUD and has basic knowledge of strategies to identify, assess, intervene, and treat addiction, as well as support recovery.
