Learning about Young Adult Behavioral Health

On August 13, SAMHSA and its Voice Awards program partners honored consumer/peer leaders and television and film professionals who are educating the public about behavioral health. The event recognized these individuals for demonstrating that people with mental and/or substance use disorders can and do recover and lead meaningful lives.

In 2014, the Voice Awards program was pleased to collaborate with UCLA and 33 program partner organizations. The awards were an opportunity to learn about the experiences of young adults and others who are dealing with mental and/or substance use disorders.

Actor James Wolk (AMC’s “Mad Men”) hosted the ninth annual event that took place at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA. The event brought together the behavioral health community and entertainment industry for a compelling and educational evening.

Attendees learned about the experiences and contributions of people living with mental and/or substance use disorders. They also discovered the importance of showing accurate, dignified, and respectful depictions of individuals with behavioral health needs in entertainment media such as film and television.
