Restoring Hope and Saving Lives

On August 12, 2015, members of the entertainment industry, behavioral health community, and general public joined "Grey's Anatomy" star Chandra Wilson for SAMHSA's 10th annual Voice Awards. The event honored recovery champions, and film and television professionals, whose work is increasing awareness and understanding of mental health and addiction issues.

Attendees met recovery leaders who are helping others with mental and substance use disorders recover, lead meaningful lives, and contribute to their communities. They also participated in recognizing Voice Award-winning television and film productions that shine a light on behavioral health issues and recovery.

This year, the Voice Awards spotlighted the impact that suicide has on individuals, families, and communities. It also addressed what each of us can do to connect those in need to the information, services, and supports that could save lives.

Community leaders who are working to raise public awareness about--and reduce instances of--suicide and suicide attempts were among those recognized at the event.

Television and film productions that sensitively portrayed mental health and addiction stories--including those of people who have considered, attempted, or died by suicide--also were honored.
