Strengthening Families Through Hope and Help
On August 10, 2016, members of the entertainment industry, behavioral health community, and general public joined Dr. Mehmet Oz for SAMHSA's 11th annual Voice Awards. The event honored community leaders and entertainment professionals who are championing recovery and bringing mental health and substance use issues out of the shadows.
Attendees met recovery champions who are demonstrating that people with mental and/or substance use disorders can and do recover, lead meaningful lives, and contribute to their communities. They also participated in recognizing Voice Award-winning television and film productions that are shining a light on behavioral health issues and the power of recovery.
In 2016, the Voice Awards highlighted the theme “Strengthening Families Through Hope and Help.” Family, consumer, and peer leaders who have embraced and promoted family support in all aspects of prevention, treatment, and recovery were among those recognized with a Voice Award. Television and film productions that portrayed the positive impact that family members can have on their loved one’s path to recovery also were honored.
